Secondary suites play an important role providing a range of housing types in Mission by offering a relatively affordable housing option for renters and the potential for additional income to homeowners. Suites are also an important part of our Affordable Housing Strategy because they offer income to homeowners who may need support to pay their mortgages. Suites are also a way to house elders and young adult dependents as they provide lower-cost rental stock options.
In Mission, secondary suites are required to be zoned and built to provincial building code standards. Suites are also built to municipal standards, which ensures there is additional onsite parking for the tenants.
The City recognizes that many suites in Mission are not zoned or built to Code standards. Recognizing that housing affordability is at an all time low, the City has allowed these suites to exist.
While secondary suites are here to stay, there are ways to address some of the challenges that come with suites without overregulating or making the addition of a suite unattainable for the homeowner. Feedback from this engagement will inform how the City moves forward.
